Attua Aparicio: Innovation through Material Experimentation

In a world where traditional crafts and contemporary design are increasingly interconnected, innovation often stems from direct experimentation with materials and processes.

This reflection leads us to explore the work of professionals who challenge established norms, seeking new forms of expression without losing the essence of craftsmanship. A clear example of this is the work of Attua Aparicio, who, throughout her career in design and craftsmanship, has uniquely and inspiringly combined tradition and modernity.

Attua will be participating in the Xornada de Oficios at the Maker Faire Galicia with her talk titled Innovation through Direct Experimentation, where she will present projects that stand out for their innovative use of materials and techniques. From her collaboration with Silo Studio, co-founded with Oscar Lessing, to her personal practice, Attua's work embraces an experimental approach with materials such as not-so-expanded polystyrene (NSEPS)fabric-molded blown glass, and her research into the combination of ceramics with borosilicate glass waste.

Graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2011, Attua has pushed beyond the conventional boundaries of design, continually exploring new avenues of creation through sustainabilitymaterial hybridization, and the importance of tactility in her works. Her collaborative work, both at Silo Studio and with other artists such as her sister Saelia Aparicioand glassblower Jochen Holz, highlights her interest in creating through multidisciplinary approaches.

In 2024, she was awarded the prestigious Ralph Saltzman Prize, which led to a solo exhibition at the Design Museum in London. Her work has also been showcased in renowned venues such as the V&A MuseumFumi Gallery, and the Form Design Center.

If you want to discover how direct experimentation can transform innovation in design and craftsmanship, don't miss Attua Aparicio's talk on November 8th at the Xornada de Oficios during the X edition of Maker Faire Galicia.
